Evaluation of Bituminous Pavement with Polypropylene Fiber
This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a hot mix asphalt overlay modified with polypropylene fiber. In 1986, a continuously reinforced concrete pavement on Interstate 69 in Meridian, MS, was overlaid with hot mix asphalt binder and surface courses. The surface course contained the additive fiber. The condition of this pavement was compared with a control section without fibers for six years. Tests were conducted using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Gyratory Testing Machine at the time of paving as well as on remolded cores. Based on the results of this study, it appears that the test and control sections performed at the same level. To study further, the Mississippi Department of Transportation has initiated a comprehensive evaluation of modified hot mix asphalt mixtures using several different modifiers that are currently available.
