Cathodic Protection of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Components
The report describes a two-year investigation of cathodic protection (CP) systems installed on interstate highway bridges in North America. The performance of 287 systems, approximately 90 percent of the highway agencies systems, as reviewed through analysis of questionnaire responses and select field investigations. Overall, a majority of the systems were working well but systems in marine or other continuously wetted environments did not perform well. Passing a CP current has the beneficial effect of removing chlorides from around the steel bar. (Copyright (c) 1992 National Academy of Sciences.)
