Nature conservation in the Anthropocene: preservation, restoration and the challenge of novel ecosystems
Traditional approaches to nature conservation focus on the preservation of sites to maintain species composition within a particular historic range. Where it is perceived that areas have become damaged, usually as a consequence of human activities, effort may then be invested in returning such areas to a pre-disturbance reference point. In this sense, historical conditions are perceived as .the ideal starting point for restoration design.
