Online Survey Education: The Great Basin College Experience
An online 4-yr degree Program in Land Surveying/Geomatics was developed for the State of Nevada at Great Basin College (GBC) between the years 2005 and 2013. The Program faced incredible challenges located in the geographically isolated northern portion of a sparsely populated State. The unique nature of the GBC Land Surveying/Geomatics Program is established with analysis of student composition and how the program was able to offer all courses and necessary laboratories online without requiring students to meet on campus or at regional site(s). This report on the evolution of this online Program may provide valuable information to those who plan to develop or improve online survey education offerings. A list of important topics are: (1) student composition; (2) student access and distance learning tuition rates; (3) student advisement at distance; (4) ability to articulate the Associate of Applied Science Degree; (5) flexibility offered by 2 + 2 program structure; (6) student laboratories at distance; (7) student remote access to computer software; and (8) the Internet Classroom.
