Varieties-of-capitalism scholars argue for national differences between liberal and coordinated market economies. Others argue that economic sectors come with distinct modes of governance. A third research strand explains the economic governance of companies through the regional system of innovation and production in which they are embedded. Problematically, this current state leaves the question open about how national, sectoral and regional economic governance interact. Using case studies from three research projects, this paper shows how the national, sectoral and regional level of economic governance can be combined by advancing the argument that incoherent institutions can be complementary
