Sustained Service Load Behavior of Concrete Beams with Recycled Concrete Aggregates
The limited application of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) in engineering projects is severely impacted by the absence of application guidelines/standards, diversity of the mechanical properties of RCA, and the yet-unclear serviceability behavior of structures made of RCA concrete. The discussed paper related the increase of both short- and long-term deflections to the contents of RCA in the concrete. Analysis of the deflection predictions highlights a need for development of a versatile model that would be reasonably accurate for estimating the short- and long-term deformations. The authors would like to thank the discussers for their discussion regarding the paper. The authors share the opinion of the discussers that there is a need for design guidelines and technical standards for the use of RCA in new concrete structures. As noted by the discussers and referenced in the paper, the creep and shrinkage strains of RCA concrete are generally substantially greater than the strains observed in conventional natural aggregate concrete.
