Concrete Pushes Mexico to New Heights
Across the globe, urban sprawl is resulting in long commutes, dispersed basic services, and strained infrastructure. These and other challenges are driving the trend behind building taller and closer to city centers, where residents can be close to jobs and services. A recent example is Torre Koi, a mixed-use skyscraper located in the VAO complex in an exclusive area of San Pedro Garza Garcia, which itself is part of the Monterrey metropolitan area in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The local building code for Monterrey therefore does not yet cover seismic design of structures, not to mention the seismic design of tall buildings. Thus, the design team for Torre Koi used additional references to address and respond to the potential seismicity of the region. This article presents the structural system and the seismic analysis and design procedures that were used.
