Computerized Project Management System
In the year 1980s, a new, hitherto unavailable mechanism was developed for successfully managing the execution of enormous design and construction projects, and the implementation originally happened with a predominantly concrete structural solution on the King Saud University project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Designed by HOK, the university was developed and delivered as a complete campus. Without the new mechanism -- a computerized project management system (CPMS) -- the international construction team would have found it considerably more difficult to efficiently complete such a challenging project. The significance of the CPMS was to provide a realistic management tool for handling an enormous number of detailed activities over the nearly 10 years required to execute the project. Implementing the CPM algorithm using digital computers allowed the rapid manipulation and review of project construction data. The tools were applied to planning, design, task scheduling, and execution; and they were particularly helpful in allowing teams to practically and realistically control the planning and execution of the work in the field.
