Updating the ACI Shear Design Provisions
The current ACI Code shear provisions, while well-established, have a few disadvantages that suggest that improvements are possible. For example, for members heavily loaded in shear, the provisions can provide overly conservative designs; by contrast, for deep one-way slabs without stirrups, the provisions can provide unconservative designs. There are also potential improvements in terms of generality and simplicity. Consider, for example, that the current code contains eight separate equations to calculate the nominal shear strength provided by concrete Vc, and yet none of these equations applies to the shear strength of prestressed columns. Bentz and Collins addressing safety issues to simplify shear provisions in the Code.
