Stress-strain conditions of nonhomogeneous bases with inclined weak layers
Conclusions 1. The presence of an inclined weak layer results in decrease in the critical loads and increase in the settlement in comparison not only with a homogeneous strong base but also with a horizontal weak layer. The maximum effect of an inclined layer occurs when the angle of inclination of the weak layer is 30 and 45°, and this layers outcrops near the boundation. 2. Construction, under the foundation, of a pad of lean concrete or gravel-pebble mix may reduce and even fully eliminate the effect of a weak inclined layer. The optimal pad thickness can be determined by analysis on the basis of solution of the combined problem of the theory of elasticity and plasticity.
