Maximum discharges of the Araks River and the historic 1969 flood
Conclusions The outstanding floods on the Araks River in 1969, the Sulak in 1963, and the Kur in 1968 resulted in a substantial increase in the previously obtained maximum discharge parameters. It has to be assumed that these cases are not isolated, since in recent years unusually high floods have occurred also in other regions of the Soviet Union, and not in all cases prior to their occurrence has it been possible to establish a historic maximum. It should therefore be noted that calculation of the maximum discharge distribution curve parameters over a relatively short series, even considering the period during which the outstanding maximum was not exceeded, results in a much greater increase in the theoretical maximum discharges than for a long series. For example, comparison of the theoretically maximum discharges on the Araks River obtained over a 50-year series and from the formula taking into account the maximum not exceeded over a period of N years (where N is taken as 73 and 101 years) has shown that these values approximate each other, and consequently are sufficiently reliable and much lower than the values obtained from the short 35-year series.
