Conclusions When designing penstocks and equipment in pumped-storage plants and when determining their operating conditions it is necessary to take into account the effect of various transients, especially those caused by a load drop and loss of drive.The program developed for calculating transients on a computer permits taking into account the real characteristics of the pump-turbine in the entire range of regimes, which ensures sufficient reliability of the results obtained.When calculating the transients at pumped-storage plants it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the hydraulic machines and penstock system. Simplified calculation methods used for units of a hydroelectric station can lead to considerable errors in this case.
