Calculation of the Chezy coefficient of earth canals
Conclusions A considerable difference was established between the actual data and the current standard recommendations on calculating the Chezy coefficient of earth canals, leading to negative economic consequences and being, in turn, the result of insufficient correspondence of the formulas used for the Chezy coefficient to the character of hydraulic friction. On the basis of the new relation (3) and mass homogeneous actual data, Eqs. (20) and (21) were developed, which substantially refine the calculation of the Chezy coefficient of earth canals and lead to more economical decisions.Equations (20) and (21), with values of the parameters for canals in cohesive soils under normal conditions, were substantiated in wide limits and are recommended also for calculating the appropriate stretches of the main Ob-Amu Darya diversion canal. The results of the present investigation, being a further confirmation of the rationality of Eq. (3), show also that the classification of earth canals according to their size (MSÉS standards) or discharges (Gosstroi standards) used in engineering hydraulics is a forced artificial and quite inadequate measure called on to mollify the noncorrespondence of the formulas used for the Chezy coefficient to the character of the phenomenon. The relations obtained in the work permit dispensing with such a classification. The result of the present investigation are recommended as the basis for revising the standard recommendations on calculating the Chezy coefficient of earth canals.
