Abstract Based on several examples obtained from rock cavities a description is given of rock deformations and their control. As a function of cause the duration of the rock deformations varies to a considerable degree. Short-term deformations can already be determined during the construction with a sufficient degree of accuracy. Long-term deformations extending over many years may often be determined only as a trend during the preliminary investigation and construction. For being in the position to dimension the construction as economically as possible a long-term supervision frequently becomes necessary even after the end of the construction.
