Relationships between origin and microstructure of rocks and soils to engineering behaviour
Summary Rocks and soils are important in civil engineering as materials of construction and as foundation materials. Certain rocks when used as concrete aggregates react expansively with alkalies from the portland cement. Poorly crystalline siliceous minerals, greywackes, phyllites and some dolomitic limestones behave in this way. As foundation materials black shales can cause heave due to biochemical reactions in which jarosite and gypsum are formed. Sensitive clays are associated with flow slides because they show large irreversible strength losses when disturbed. The mechanisms of the reactions associated with these very different problems in engineering geology can all be related to the origin, microstructure and composition of the rocks and soils involved.
