Formation of engineering geological properties of marl-chalk rock under arid-lithogenesis conditions
Summary The paper deals with the genetic conditions of formation of the Oligocene Marl-Chalk rocks in the middle reach of the Euphrates River in Syria. Given in the paper are the rock forming components, microstructure and microtexture of the rock which were investigated with the help of an electron microscope. The paper also shows the distinction between the rock developed in arid conditions and the similar formations of the humid zone, and considers the dependence of the physical and mechanical properties on the genetic peculiarities. Considerable attention is given to hypergene processes, in this case, dolomitization which considerably distorts the original genetic characteristics of the rock and its properties.
