Gravitational deformations of valley slopes in tectonically fractured rock masses
Summary In tectonically reworked rock masses, the fundamental factors responsible for the state of stress in the rock mass, are orogeny and other geodynamic processes of physical and chemical character connected with it. By the removal of the rock mass (due to erosion, excavation, etc.) a redistribution of stresses and subsequent deformations take place near the surface. On the slope, the rock is disrupted into blocks due to release joints, the joints widen and the blocks undergo creep movement. Depending on time or a suitable impulse (such as anthropogenous intervention), the creep movement of the blocks passes into a faster motion—sliding or falling. An example is here discussed of such gravitational failure of a rock wall in northern Slovakia, 1975 (Podbiel’).
