Aggregate characteristics for the Balbina Dam in the Amazon region, Brazil

Abstract The progressive investigation of the concrete aggregates for construction of the Balbina Dam, related to geological, petrographical and technological characteristics is presented. The Balbina Hydroelectric Project is located in the Amazon Region, in an area with rhyolite, keratophyre, andesite and associated rocks. The thickness of the sedimentary rocks and the dense vegetal cover made local geological and geotechnical studies difficult. Only after the completion of complementary drilling and the mapping of the first excavations was it possible to evaluate the actual characteristics of the rock available for aggregate.
