Gravel deposits survey in south central Brazil
Abstract The largest hydroelectric development of Brazil, with 37 hydroelectric power plants, is located on the Paraná river basin, in the south central region of the country. The basalt lavas found in this region are practically unsuitable for aggregate use, due to the presence of expansive clay minerals which may cause their rapid disaggregation when exposed to natural weathering conditions. To overcome this problem gravels from river bed deposits were used as aggregate for concrete and filters. The experience gained from the gravel survey programmes carried out for some projects presently under construction are described in the paper.
