Comparison of the geotechnical properties of crushed shales from Southeastern Nigeria
Abstract The geotechnical properties of crushed shales from the Abakaliki (Albian), Awgu (Coniacian) and Enugu (Campanian) Shale Formations have been assessed to determine their suitability for use in construction projects. The results indicate the Abakaliki Shale is likely to be satisfactory as a fill and embankment material, although the relatively high liquid limit and plasticity index may result in some swelling of the compacted shale. It is not suitable as a sub-base or base course for pavements. The Awgu and Enugu Shales may also serve well as fill and embankment materials, although their fines fraction is higher than the recommended limits. Both shales are unsuitable for use as sub-base or base course, unless improved. The use of heavy compaction equipment is recommended wherever these shales are used in geotechnical projects.
