Rectangular cartograms, spatial autocorrelation, and interpolation
Abstract This paper deals with two related problems. The first problem is how best to represent regions such as parliamentary constituencies that have equal importance but unequal size. The algorithm proposed assigns each region to a point on a rectangular lattice. The resulting map is termed a rectangular cartogram and forms the basis for a geographical information system. The second problem concerns the best way to interpolate regional data. Such interpolation can provide estimates of missing values and can detect unusual local values. The properties of the solution proposed for this problem depend upon the amount of spatial autocorrelation present.
