Abstract In addition to a biography of M Hell and of his companion, J Sajnovics, the background of his youth, the Selmec Academy and its connection with the Jesuit order is shortly characterized. The circumstances and events of the Northern expedition and the best known result, the discovery of the Finnish-Hungarian linguistic relationship by Sajnovics are mentioned, then Hell’s views on auroras before and after the expedition are summarized, together with the description of some observations made during the voyage and in Vardo in connection with auroras and magnetism are discussed.
