The influence of structure on the shear strength of intact lumps of miocene fissured clay
Summary For the study of the influence of natural structure on the shear strength, the samples cut from intact lumps of brown stiff fissured clay were tested. Microscopic study of structure has shown that there is no preferred arrangement of aggregates of clay particles. On the other hand, however, the particles building up the aggregates have most probably parallel arrangement. Due to the seepage of groundwater, very thin horizontal layers of hydroxides of iron (limonite) had been precipitated and cross anisotropy of deformation properties has been formed. Drained shear box tests have shown that there is no anisotropy of effective values of shear strength from the technical point of view. The results of undrained triaxial tests with porewater-pressure measurements on isotropically consolidated samples have revealed that the effective values of shear strength are independent of the manner of loading. On the other hand, the undrained shear strength has had strong dependence on the way of loading.
