Dominant geomorphic events in landform evolution
Summary The uniformitarian contention of WOLMAN and MILLER (1960) that the bulk of sediment in stream channels is moved by discharges at or near bankfull discharge is questioned for areas of hillslope evolution by mass movement processes. To explain slope evolution in areas of high relief, intense rainfall, active tectonics and deep regoliths a mild form of catastrophism is necessary. In the hills of the North Island of New Zealand the dominant land-forming events are rainstorms which for pasture areas have a return period of 30 years, but in forest areas are of such magnitude that they require a return period of 100 years. Rates of denudation are higher than in most other temperate regions.
