Computer-aided updating of the engineering geological map of rouen
Summary For the updating of the engineering geological map of the city of Rouen, the existence of a computerized engineering geological data file (FIDGI) containing all the available borehole data made it possible to use various data processing methods:- standard automatic mapping methods,- assisted mapping methods, using interactive techniques (VERCORS system). After having reviewed the geological context of the investigated zone and briefly described the programs and systems used, the authors discuss the chronology of the work carried out, the difficulties encountered and the approaches used to overcome them. As the filed data are by nature of variable quality and exhibit a highly irregular spatial distribution, automatic and semiautomatic engineering geological data processing methods can be regarded only as an aid to interpretation and not as an interpretation tool per se. This aid is nevertheless very valuable, from the standpoint of checking the validity of data as well as from that of data processing itself. From this viewpoint, interactive methods offer a certain advantage over purely automatic methods.
