Summary Based on test results on different andesites and some water reservoirs constructed in Hungary, the importance of exploration by engineering geological methods for the preliminary design stage is pointed out. Field explorations, laboratory tests and evaluations have to be planned according to the engineering goal. A problem of major importance for reservoirs built in the andesitic area considered was to determine discontinuity and resulting water-tightness. Laboratory test results were tabulated.
