Summary The objective of engineering geological mapping is to present the geological condition for solving some problems in engineering construction. The mapping theory and method should be concerned in close relation to the engineering design and construction. There are various kinds of engineering geological map, the difference between them is due to the different view point of engineering geologist's recognition, selection and expression of the natural geological factors. An engineering geological map should be able to reflect clearly and accurately the natural conditions and should be convenient in application for engineering design and construction. The rock mass is considered to be a complex product of the geological formation and deformation, its principal nature being of a definite structure. Under engineering loading, the deformation and failure of the rock mass are mainly governed by the structure of rock mass. According to the above point of view, in engineering geoogical mapping attention is paid to stability problems. This paper discusses the engineering geological mapping and its application at Jin Chuan open pit mine.
