The karst problem in Bulgaria
Abstract The karst terrains in Bulgaria occupy about 7 100 sq. km. or about 6.5 per cent of the country's territory. Some more important difficulties which have considerably delayed the building of dams are created by the karst in the Lower Cretaceous limestones forming the left abutment zone of the Mihaylovgrad dam and reservoir. During the building of multiple dams in Dobroudja, great problems were created by the water losses in the deep Dobroudja karst. The karst waters have also a definite significance in building a number of underground appurtenances for the exploitation of some ore deposits in the Rhodopes and Dobroudja.
