Stress and water flow relation in fractured rock
Summary A field test was performed to investigate the relation between rock stresses and the hydraulic properties of a fractured rock mass. In thisin situ test, a rock volume of 6 $ m^{3} $ was subjected to variable external loads and internal water pressures. The results show that the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass varies as a result of loading and water injection, a variation due to deformation of existing fractures. Generally, an increase in water pressure widens the fracture apertures and increases the conductivity, while the effect of the external load depends on the fracture geometry in relation to the induced stress field.
