Skid resistance of marginal durability aggregates
Abstract Laboratory polishing is commonly used to evaluate aggregate skid resistance characteristics. For marginal to poor durability stones, field results may differ from those predicted from polishing tests, giving significantly higher or lower skid resistance. These differences can be related to the petrographic characteristics of the rocks. Three distinct textures have been identified which lead to predictable variations between field and laboratory polishing. For one texture type, the field skid resistance is much lower than laboratory results indicate. As this texture is found in many skid resistance aggregates, the effect is considered important, particularly in evaluating new deposits.
