Cryogenic Heaving of Peat and Peaty Soils
This article presents the results of experimental studies on the cryogenic heaving of peat and peaty soils under laboratory conditions. Peat with a water saturation coefficient of less than 40% did not exhibit heaving properties, and heaving deformation increased with soil moisture concentration. The moisture concentration of peat samples increased under freezing conditions owing to the cryogenic migration of water. This work presents the mechanism of the cryogenic heaving of peaty soils, the regularities of deformation of such soils under freezing conditions, and the influence of the organic matter concentration of the frozen soil.
