Clean-burning fuel for use in woodstoves: feminist politics, community development and global sustainability
Women in rural areas of lesser-industrialised countries frequently cook on woodstoves using fuels that produce smoke which is, in many cases, extremely toxic and damaging to their health. With dwindling fuel supplies, the collection of existing fuelwood is often arduous and also can contribute to continuing deforestation. This paper explores the feminist, sociological and community development issues involved in the process of introducing a clean-burning fuel produced by technologies that convert biomass to energy, for use in woodstoves and related appliances. This paper is critical of ‘development’ ideologies and advocates an approach that navigates between local community needs and strategies for global sustainability.
