Homestead Livestock and Household Livelihood in Sarawak: Innovations versus Improvements
This article is based on the author's observations of “homestead” livestock production in Sarawak, Malaysia, within farming systems based on the production of rice as a subsistence crop together with perennial cash crops, and on his experience with attempts to “improve” homestead livestock production by the introduction of various innovations. It describes and attempts to analyse the role of livestock in the household economy and suggests reasons why innovations may fail or be resisted. It concludes by putting forward some guidelines which may prove of general relevance in assessing the scope for improvement of homestead livestock production.
