Protecting natural resources: course of a river movement
The protection of natural resources is core to the concept of sustainable development, where socioeconomic development must be accompanied by environmental protection, so that the needs of the future are not compromised. Once a vibrant water body, the Saraswati River in West Bengal has decayed due to both natural and human factors. The attempt to revive the river is therefore a significant case to study as there is much academic interest in water – a significant natural resource. It also puts forward a vision of sustainable development. At the same time, as a ‘new social movement’, it has been able to rise above partisan calculations, to use non-confrontational advocacy as a method, and to forge alliances with like-minded organizations to entrench its network of support.
