Case Study: The Acoustical Characteristics of Typical Argentinean Classrooms
Numerous recent investigations have demonstrated that the acoustical environment in a classroom is an important variable contributing to the academic and psychological achievement of the students. Excessive ambient noise and reverberation in classrooms are serious obstacles for the learning experience because they typically interfere with speech recognition. This study reports on the acoustical qualities and architectural features of typical classrooms in Argentina. It is shown that, in high school and university classrooms studied in Bahia Blanca, the acoustical parameters investigated differ significantly from those recommended by international criteria and guidelines, and so are highly inadequate from an acoustic standpoint.
