A Simplified Method for the Buckling of Outrigger-Shear Wall Braced Structures
This paper presents the analysis of the buckling of single-outrigger-shear-wall braced structures in which the shear-deformable outrigger is located at an arbitrary height. The contributions of component rigidities and the location of the outrigger to the overall stiffness of outrigger-shear-wall braced structures have been identified. A continuous model, where the exterior frames attached to the outrigger are modeled as shear-deformable-only and the action of the outrigger on the shear wall is replaced by a rotational restraint at the outrigger level, was used to analyze the buckling of single-outrigger-shear-wall braced structures. Analytical and approximate solutions are presented and compared with each other, and verification analyses were carried out using FEM. It is found that the outrigger-shear-wall braced structure may be considered as a type of dual structural system, although some of the exterior frame columns contribute to the function of the outrigger-shear-wall system. The total critical load for the outrigger-shear-wall braced structure is the sum of the critical loads for the frames and for the outrigger-shear-wall systems when they are each considered to function as independent structures. Although this paper is not intended to replace overall buckling analysis of this type of structure, the conclusion of this paper is helpful for understanding the behaviour of real outrigger-shear-wall braced structures against buckling.
