Elastic and Elastic-Plastic Stability of Dual Structural Systems
A closed form solution is presented for the elastic buckling of dual shear-flexural strucutral systems. For elastic-plastic systems, Jezek's model is extended to be connected continuously along height with hinged columns modeling frames in a dual system. Initial drift is introduced in this extended model, veritical loads are exerted to top of the bracing elastic-plastic column and the hinged columns, a horizontal force is acted on the top of the bracing column. Approximate closed form solution on the load carrying capacity of the bracing column is obtained, from which the demand on the cross-sectional stiffness of the bracing column is derived. From this simplified dual structural system, observations on the stability design approach of high-rise buildings are presented.
