Brutalist University Building Energy Refurbishment – Case Study
Timisoara has numerous university buildings with valuable architectural design built in the XX-th century. The first of them were erected after the first world war, as part of the Politehnica campus following a layout of the famous Romanian modernist architect Duiliu Marcu, having specific brick facades and decorative elements, along with pitched roofs. The second wave of new buildings marks the post second world war era, with new materials and techniques, such as prefabricated reinforced concrete, large openings and flat roofs. The Faculty of Electrotechnics, built in the ‘70s, is one of the best examples that needs to be energy refurbished to comply with nowadays requirements, while keeping its recognizable aspect. A comprehensive study was done, starting from the initial project (plans, details), considering NZEB principles and green politics. Through the analyzed results, this paper provides important information about a possible approach on reinforced concrete heritage brutalist constructions, with sustainability as secondary task.
