Manufacturability Assessment of Custom Knee Implant Prototype
Knee implantation is the process of performing thigh and calf bone surgery. Damaged cartilage and bones are removed from the knee by the surgeon. Doctors decide whether a partial or complete knee condyle implant is to be used at the end of the thigh and calf bone. Additive manufacturing is a technique for creating digital designs in physical models. Different 3D printing technologies and materials are available to print the object. The computer design is turned into the STL file format, which is then used to create a three-dimensional actual prototype with adding material layer by layer. It is critical to ensure product quality, which includes inspecting part quality, surface polish, and dimensional accuracy. In this study, custom knee implant prototypes are printed using different printing techniques and parameters. The printed prototypes are tested for surface finish and part quality. The cost analysis is also carried out for FDM, DLP, SLA, and SLS printed parts.
