Rural Tourism Management as a Route to a Smart Territory Within the Framework of the Triple Transition. Opportunities from a Colombian Rural Territory
The objective of the work was to characterize the rural tourism offered in Magdalena Caldense from the analysis of the actors and biocultural resources involved in a growing economic activity. The characterization was made based on the use of biocultural resources by Tourism Service Providers, following a methodology that combined the use of qualitative and quantitative tools applied in participatory field days during 2021. It was found that rural tourism as it is currently being offered represents an important economic activity for the territory, thanks to the biodiversity existing in the four municipalities that make up the subregion. At the same time, it represents a risk in the face of the potential existence of social and environmental problems associated with the exercise of the activity and the possible possibility of migrating towards mass tourism. In the identification of problems associated with rural tourism, the development of the activity without prior processes of territorial planning is notorious, involving all actors and leading to regulate and ensure the sustainable use of existing resources. A situation that is evident is the high degree of informality identified in the provision of the tourist service. A critical invitation is made to improve the quality of life of the region's inhabitants and increase the territory's competitiveness. The high and growing social and economic importance of tourism in the territory and the evident risk of unsustainability of the resources involved are opportunities for the triple transition (ecological, socioeconomic and digital) to consolidate Magdalena Caldense as a Smart Territory.
