Thermal Energy Storage
This chapter is focused on the analysis of TES technologies that provides a way of valorising solar heat and reducing the energy demand of buildings. The principles of several energy storage methods and calculation of storage capacities are described. Sensible heat storage technologies, including the use of water, underground and packed-bed are briefly reviewed. Latent heat storage (LHS) systems associated with phase change materials (PCMs) and thermo-chemical storage, as well as cool thermal energy storage are also discussed. Finally, an abridged version of the comprehensive review published on the development of LHS systems focused on heat transfer and enhancement techniques employed in PCMs to effectively charge and discharge latent heat energy, and the formulation of the phase change problem are provided.
