Formation and Stability of a Metastable c(2×4)0 Structure on an Unreconstructed Ni(110) Surface
Abstract Experimental data are presented that demonstrate the instantaneous formation of a (poorly) ordered c(2×4) structure of atomic oxygen on a nonreconstructed Ni(110) substrate upon oxygen exposure at 85 K. This phase is metastable with respect to the reconstructed (2×1)/(3×1) phases. It is shown to exist also at temperatures above the transition temperature as a long living precursor for the activated formation of the reconstructed structures.
