Scattering from Stepped Surfaces and Roughening
Abstract One of the most interesting aspects of helium diffraction is its outstanding sensitivity to steps on surfaces. Indeed step analysis has became one of the major applications of helium diffraction in surface structure analysis. Steps are almost always present on surfaces as a consequence of either an imperfect preparation or thermal equilibrium. Thus the characterization of residual steps on a sample is a necessary operation prior to any serious surface study.
