Ordering Process in a Quenched Tricritical System
Abstract Among the various ordering dynamics a tricritical system provides us with several interesting characteristic features.1-3To be specific weconsider a binary alloy consisting of A and B atoms, which exhibits a phase diagram as shown in Fig.1. At high temperatures the system is in a disordered phase. The broken line in Fig.1 indicates the second order order-disorder transition line below which the system undergoes a macroscopic order. Note that the concentration X is defined such that the numbers of A and B atoms are equal at X=0. For simplicity we assume that the system is symmetric under the interchange of A and B atoms. Below the tricritical temperature Tt. the order-disorder transition line separates into two coexistence lines as indicated by the full lines in Fig.1. Thus we note that at least three different types of temperature quench are possible. The arrows show such quenches.
