Fostering Cities’ Resilience and Social Cohesion Through Schoolyard Redevelopment
Strengthening cities’ resilience has become one of the crucial ways to counteract detrimental changes brought about by rapid urban expansion and development. One of the ways to reduce negative consequences and foster cities’ resilience is to consider the existing schoolyards as spaces that could, in part, compensate for the loss of open public spaces and urban greenery and improve social cohesion. As most national and local education and planning policies demand the even distribution of primary school networks throughout the urban structure, the accompanying schoolyards could be reconceptualized as planning resources for urban public space amelioration and expansion throughout the city. The paper examines international examples of cities in which this strategy was successfully applied and briefly discusses three case studies of potential application in Sarajevo. The case studies from Sarajevo demonstrate how a different perspective on existing schoolyards could establish the basis for turning them into quality spaces, not just for schoolchildren but also for the whole community.
