Historical Construction Research Based Upon 3D Digital Documentation of the Baroque Palais im Grossen Garten in Dresden
This paper explores the construction research of a recent 3D imaging campaign and resulting documentation of the 17th century Palais im Grossen Garten in Dresden, Germany. Both Structure from Motion (SfM) Photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) were employed for the recording process, from which the resulting 3D models provided the basis for the ensuing construction research. This represents only one example of six buildings located in Germany and France intended for digital recording as part of the multi-institutional and international PLAFOND-3D project. The emphasis of this paper is upon the interdisciplinary approach toward recording a high resolution model with the aim of collaboratively researching the construction history using digital assets. It is a streamlined process, beginning with an innovative procedure for recording a large structure with methods from engineering metrology, thus guaranteeing an accurate and empirical documentation.
