UAV-assisted Digital Terrain Model Applied to the Graphic Representation of Cultural Heritage Sites
The ICOMOS charter on Cultural Heritage Sites refers to a medium in which graphic representation forms part of their global preservation and management process. In settings with considerable spatial and geometrical complexity, where, in addition to the built heritage, cultural values interrelated to the site must be represented, making the right choice of representation technique is decisive.
For centuries, the representation of cities and territories has evolved towards projective methods, in an attempt to express the determination of the spatial, formal and structural relationships between architecture and its environment; but, also, more intangible, natural, social or cultural issues, too. In this evolution, the use of graphic devices, to provide the representation with values of multilateralism, simultaneity and integrity, has been explored, as well as others that clearly expressed these intangible type relationships.
Using the case of the Salt Valley of Añana as an example, in its condition of cultural heritage site associated with a local community-managed activity, the application of the UAV-assisted Digital Terrain Model to graphic presentation is analysed, as a new step in this evolutionary process. It is thus established that this new tool adds new values to the previous ones, such as the high precision range, georeferencing or interactivity with the model, in addition to the possibility of incorporating supplementary information through different multimedia systems, converting it into a highly efficient option for the graphic presentation of cultural heritage sites.
