Deep excavation of an underground metro station in karstic limestone: a case history in the Klang Valley SSP Line
Many deep excavations and shafts in the karstic limestone formation have been constructed to-date in Kuala Lumpur. A case history in the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line is discussed in this paper, starting from the early phase of site investigation to the challenges encountered during construction. From the standpoint of a design-and-build/turnkey contractor, a wide breadth of geotechnical engineering considerations has to be appreciated, consisting of the method of construction, selection of retaining system, ground improvement, as well as management of settlements and sinkholes. The accommodating of an adjoining transit-oriented development is discussed.
