Water Disasters in the Territory of Armenia
This work is dedicated to the study of flood and mudflow formation on the territory of Armenia. It studies and evaluates the peculiarities of flood and mudflow formation in the recent 70–80 years, the regularities of their extension as well as the ways of struggling against them. The integral curves of changes of annual absolute maximum runoffs and their module coefficients have been calculated for several rivers in provinces of Armenia having different bio-climatic conditions. According to the curves, for four of the five rivers studied the absolute maximum runoff has a tendency to decrease. However, their runoff recurrence frequency has increased. The same pattern is observed in the case of mudflows. According to the data of the State Committee on Emergencies (STE), during the period of 2004–2006, the damage caused by floods and mud-flows was estimated at US$5–6 billion.
