Abstract Management becomes an important part of bridge engineering. Bridge management system (BMS) provides support for decisions regarding evaluations, maintenance, repairs, rehabilitation and replacements. Computerized BMS’s are being developed and implemented in the United States, Canada and Europe. Topics identified for further development include: 1. Need for identification of necessary data to drive a bridge management system. Data necessary for assessment is not necessarily the same as for bridge management. 2. Need for development of deterioration models. 3. Need for better tools for field assessment of deterioration, i.e. better description of component states. 4. Need for a good competitive bridge management system that is easy to input, easy to operate, and is understandable.
